Illinois State Seal of Biliteracy

Students that meet the guidelines for proficiency in both English and another language may be eligible to earn the State Seal of Biliteracy or Commendation toward Biliteracy. English proficiency is earned by achieving a minimum score of 540 on the ELA portion of the SAT. Proficiency in another language is earned by achieving the score of Intermediate High (I-5) in each of the four established domains of Speaking, Listening, Writing and Reading, on the AAPPL exam. Student may earn the Commendation toward Biliteracy by achieving a minimum score of Intermediate Low (I-1) on each of the four domains. If a student meets the requirements for the Seal of Biliteracy or Commendation the seal or commendation will be placed on the student’s transcripts.
